"VAN LEER ROWE"

Come and visit Edisto Island and discover a very special way of living in our busy world of today. Edisto is known for its natural beauty and quiet island way of life. On Edisto you will not find any traffic lights, hotels, motels or high-rise buildings. Instead you will discover “island life”. The pace is slow on Edisto. Locals as well as visitors enjoy the peace and quiet found on Edisto. Edisto is a special place where the residents of Edisto and its visitors want to see that the island is protected from over commercial development. Edisto is a family island and beach. The island is part of the Ace Basin. The ACE Basin is one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast. It’s named for the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers.

Highway 174 is the only road coming to Edisto. After leaving Highway 17 you will begin an approximate 17-mile drive to Edisto. On this drive you will begin to experience the “low country” of South Carolina. You will drive by salt marshes and creeks, through several avenues of live oak trees draped with Spanish moss. You will pass historic churches, farms and plantations. Highway 174 will lead you straight to the Atlantic Ocean. Highway 174 is now known officially as the Edisto Island National Scenic Byway. The historic area of the highway begins at the McKinley Washington Bridge to Palmetto Boulevard at Edisto Beach. As noted on the Edisto Island Preservation Alliance web site “We are trying to preserve Edisto as a place where birds, animals, and the environment are protected. We want to keep this a place where traffic moves at a moderate pace and where the activities we enjoy - fishing, bird watching, walking, biking, paddling a kayak or canoe, or simply reading a book and talking with friends can all be done without noise, light pollution, litter, or crowds.” Please go to http://www.preserveedisto.org/ for more information.
